For the first time in more than two decades, NBA expansion is finally on the horizon. NBA owners approved a plan Wednesday to explore expanding into Las Vegas and Seattle, according to ESPN, and with momentum seemingly building, it feels likelier than ever that we will have two new teams playing in the NBA before the end of the decade.
The WNBA and NBA Board of Governors on Thursday formally approved new expansion teams coming to Cleveland, Detroit and Philadelphia. The initial announcement of expanding to those cities, totaling to 18 teams, came on June 30, 2025. The movement was subject to the approval, which is now formal.
The league will grow to 18 teams as new franchises launch between 2028 and 2030.
